Italy: Mary corners + Vatican City

All over Italy there were what I dubbed, "Mary corners."
They would just be on a random corner.  I was fascinated by this.  It inspired me to take a photo and say a prayer to her Son each time I saw one.

We took a private tour of the Vatican.  Our tour guide was an American whose parents live in Charlotte! Quite the coinky-dink, right?
She was awesome.
This is the "fake" Pieta that you can get close to in one of the Vatican Museums.  I love the Pieta and I couldn't wait to see this amazing work of art.  Did you know it was the only sculpture that Michelangelo signed?

I look plain exhausted and swollen here.  We had only arrived the morning before and note to self...do not eat salty snacks before getting on a plane for 9 hours.  I had some major cankles going on.

This tapestry was stunning in person.  It has spun gold in it!  Plus, as you walk along it, Jesus never takes his eyes off of you.  Amazing!

This is where the Pope walks to his balcony...I think.

The Pope balcony.

The "real" Pieta.  I could stare at this all day.

Pope John Paul II.

Look how enormous St. Peter's is!

So huge!
St. Peter's tomb is under here.  See how tiny Tim looks standing there?

The Vatican Post is supposed to be the most reliable way to mail something in Italy.  We mailed our boys postcards we picked up from here on July 16th.  They still haven't arrived.

We did decide to climb to the top of St. Peter's dome.  It was about 20 minutes of stairs.  Totally worth it.  Plus I was planning on a big plate of pasta later.

Going back down was scarier to me.  I am always afraid I am going to fall.

Plus it is all leany.

So I think I can wrap up Italy in two more posts.
Are you bored yet?
Thanks for sticking with me.

I am not bored at all! Nope, never! In our church, behind the altar, above the tabernacle, we have a flat, gold pieta on the wall. It's HUGE and I look at it all the time when I'm praying. It's one of my favorite images. Now that you've been to Vatican City, you need to compare to it to Hanceville..... one of my friends kids thinks he's been to see where the Pope lives because Mother Angelica's is so ornate and gorgeous!

That leany staircase makes me dizzy! I love those Mary corners. Those are really beautiful and fascinating. I would have gone crazy photographing those as well. LOVE the Pieta. I think I could cry just looking at it. We have a framed drawing of it at our house, and I love it.

BEAUTIFUL photos here, all of them!

I'm always scared of falling down steps.

I am so amazed. I was in Italy at age 11 but I don't remember much. Your pictures are making me weepy. Strange thing, but apparently I'm not the only one. My soul is in love with Italia.
