Oh boy, I love Instagram! These are some shots that have been sitting on my computer. I've got a ton more instagram shots still sitting on my phone. On this day as I was exiting my bathroom and saw my reflection. I thought it looked interesting with the frame of the mirror.

And I kinda felt like I was having a good hair day. Since most days my hair is in a sweaty, tiny ponytail I thought I might as well capture it.

For Christmas I made both of my boys photo books of them together, in brotherly love photos so they could realize they do love each other. One has yet to take his out of the cellophane and the other left it on the counter, probably without cracking the cover.

They'll appreciate this in the future, right?

Do I really need to caption this photo?

I think not. Other than YUM.

Despite life being really busy right now with two teen boys involved in polar opposite activities and different high schools, I still managed to get completely caught up with Downton Abbey.

And take pictures of my all time favorite scarf. Ever.

I finally used a pinterest idea! I made a whole package of farro and divided it into individual mason jars. I am the only one eating it. My husband calls it squirrel food every time he opens the fridge. It kinda made it less appetizing once he called it that. Farro may be a "one and done" for me.

Lucky duck.

I always love the idea of my husband working from home. But he really works. I always imagine us sipping coffee and exchanging pleasantries and going out for a nice long lunch.

The reality is he really works all day long. Oh well. I still prefer him home as opposed to going to the office.

Pretty.

A new restaurant is opening up in my city.

My husband got an invitation to have dinner at the restaurant.

I was excited, but really thought it was an opportunity for the chefs and waiters to "practice."

Tim + I sat down and perused the menu.

While leisurely sipping my wine I turn my head to the left and see Emeril!

I did not realize he would actually be there cooking dinner!

I looked around at the other diners and I seemed to be the only one impressed.

They were so, well, classy.

I was all grinny and nerdy, whipping out my camera.

Poor Tim. He can't take me anywhere.

(Here's the appetizer I ordered...ceviche. Yum.)

Here's the thing....I am not really a huge Emeril fan.

In fact, if I am watching the Food Network, I turn it off when he comes on.

Why do I get so excited?

(This salad was so good!)

The funniest part was that I texted my sister to tell her I was looking at Emeril and she texted me back:

That is so cool! Do you even use his spices?

(The entree I chose. This was good. Not great.)

But here's the thing. If you have been on television and then I see you in real life,

I am going to act ridiculous.

Which is odd, because I am not a big "celebrity follower."

I don't subscribe to Us or People.

But I turn into a whole other weirdy if I see them in real life.

(I remembered to take a photo of this after I had eaten part of it. What? It's dessert, people! And actually, this was Tim's dessert. He shared with me because I didn't love mine)

I once acted all stalkery when I spotted a local news anchor in Costco.

She was looking at vitamins. So, naturally I needed to look at vitamins.

And I once saw another weekend anchor in HomeGoods. I breathlessly tracked down Tim and said, Guess who is on the candle aisle???

So, who wants to book a trip to Hollywood with me?

Do you act all bizarre if you see someone remotely famous,

or are you as cool as a cucumber?

The Weekend: Blurry Edition

I am aware the photo is blurry.

It was a shock to me as I uploaded it today.

It looked perfect on the little screen thingy on my camera.

No matter, it still tells a story.

This couch was the final frontier for Sesame.

The last piece of furniture in our home she was not allowed on.

Next, she'll be deciding what we have for dinner.

My boy had a basketball game this weekend. But I must confess this photo was taken the weekend before when I was on my whole "manual" kick.

She is completely rotten.

And a camera hog for sure.

When I wasn't taking blurry photos I was having myself a Downton Abbey marathon.

I am hooked! Thank you Mrs. Ostrich for telling me about this show.

I re-started my Netflix account and it was worth every penny.

And if this were a video blog you'd probably put me on mute because I can't help myself speaking with a British accent. I daresay I do a jolly good accent.

Go make yourself a cuppa and join the bandwagon!

This was leftover from 10 on the 10th. I fancied myself creative taking a photo of the GPS. Kinda makes me want to take a nap right now.

Oh this? This is camera #2 in my old camera collection. This photo...

I like it.

Yet another reason I am a fan of teens with cell phones and texting. Our poor Moms missed out on this!

That being said, I've always wanted to be a 1950s Mom with an apron and a freshly baked apple pie.

Even though baking is not my thang.

This baby...he's my thang. I married him! I love this photo. However, my husband still questions that it is a photo of him and not a sibling. Toot Toot, could you weigh in please?

I hope it's my husband. If not, I have stared lovingly at this photo which is in a silver frame in my bedroom for years...and, well,

that'd be weird if it wasn't my man.

A prayer before a basketball game.

Teenagers + prayer= a good thing.

Nothing like whipping out your cell phone camera and snapping a photo in a cooking shop of a product that you do not intend to purchase because you are eating clean.

I just didn't want this calling me from my pantry.

That being said, I will consume this next time I am in NYC.

Oh, it's come to light what excites my older child on his birthday.

Awesome.

I cannot take credit for these photos.

They "just appeared" when I uploaded my photos.

And there are three things that dawned on me as I looked at these pictures.

1. I may have rubbed off a bit on my son, despite the fact that he is the spitting image + personality of his Dad.

2. My dog is patient. Very patient.

And 3, I would've loved to have been a fly on the wall as my dog was put into this hoodie and these photos were captured.

{P.S. I realize it is difficult to tell, but Sesame is wearing an Avett Brothers hoodie that belongs to a certain someone}

Sniglets

Remember sniglets? Well, today "sniglet" means little bits of information that will update you on the goings on here with the Frat Pack + Me.

First off, I took a photography class with a neighbor (Hi! if you're reading ;)

and sorta learned to take photos on manual.

Which has been a goal of mine for a number of years.

Hence, the floral photos and such.

I say, "sorta learned" because when I attempted to take photos of my son playing basketball yesterday, all bets were off.

Hence, you will see no basketball shots on here today.

So I have decided to keep my blog name as is.

But not before asking for input from the actual Frat Pack.

My oldest looked at me with his 17 year old eyes with a look that said,

"really? um, don't really care. Whatever."

Moving on.

The youngest member of the Frat Pack had a few ideas.

Please keep in mind this was after he asked if he could buy a new X-box game.

You might be able to guess what my answer was.

His first suggestion was, "The Funsucker."

His next suggestion was, "The Anti-Xbox Live Mom That Makes Her Kids Sad."

Catchy, right?

His final suggestion was, "Clean Eating with Mildred."

I may be going a tad overboard with declaring all food consumed up in here

either "clean" or "unclean."

So, Frat Pack + Me it shall remain.

Last story, I promise.

I was calling my new health insurance company on the way to the doctor with my youngest.

The call was taking place via blue tooth, so my son was obviously hearing the call.

The lady said,

Hello, this is Blah-de-Blah Health insurance,

Champagne speaking. May I help you?

Yep. Her name is really Champagne.

After the call ended my son said,

"Well, I think we know what her parents were drinking when she was conceived."

I love life with teenagers.

Come to think of it, he's always been this way.

I shared in a recent post that my son really isn't into his birthday.

He doesn't drop hints.

He doesn't plan for weeks.

He likes the day to quietly come and quietly go.

I was looking through some old photos to post a montage of past birthdays and I came across a few that made me realize,

well,

he's always been like this.

Let's take a look at his 3rd birthday, shall we?

There's my little sweetheart!

We were at a restaurant and thought how fun it would be to have the staff sing Happy Birthday.

This is the look on his face as they were approaching.

His Dad and I were grinning and smiling and saying,

this is for you!

Let's just say he really didn't cotton to the attention.

Even if it included a brownie with a scoop of ice cream the size of his noggin.

They get almost finished with the song and The Predicament and I are clapping and smiling and my boy looks at me like this...

That face says, GET ME OUT OF HERE!

Even a year later you can see all this hoopla just isn't his thing.

So his birthday is here and he still has asked for nothing.

I have driven him nuts with

"how about this?' or "how about that?"

and he just patiently shakes his head.

Yesterday afternoon he shared with me that he hates it when his birthday is on a school day because they say the birthdays over the intercom.

I went into his room and said,

Happy Birthday Mr. 17 year old!

He said, "I know what I want for my birthday. Can I sleep in and miss first period?"

{which conveniently make him absent for the birthday announcement}

What would you have said?

I said yes. Especially after I came across these photos.

It has taken me 17 years to have it really sink in that my boy doesn't like a lot of fuss.

So today will pass quietly,

with some cash and a hug and maybe dinner out.

We won't tell the waiter we are celebrating.

I may get him a cupcake, but that may be more about me.

Yay! No strep. My baby is now 5'7 and 1/4. I am officially the shortest person in the home.

Nothing soothes a sore throat like a shake, right?

Ahhh, to have the metabolism of teen boys.

This was the big highlight of the day.

Actually, it was this. At 4:45 pm.

Scripture study.

This is what a semi-clean dinner looks like when I need to hit the grocery store.

Every. Single. Night.

On the errand list for tomorrow.

Oh, you guys! I cleaned out my bedside drawer. I am tempted to keep it open just to enjoy the beauty of it,

Coffee Talk

Well, it's a bit late in the day for coffee for me, so I'm gonna sip hot tea.

Hope so.

First off, I am considering a blog title change. It's not so much about the Frat Pack, is it? I am committed to respecting their privacy and only share what they are comfortable with.

And can I say, it has been bonding asking their permission.

It has built a trust between us.

Chalk up another positive for the 'ol blog.

What is your opinion on a name change?

Oh, my youngest is home sick today. We are headed to the doctor in a bit. He's been complaining of a sore throat for 5 or 6 days. I'll bet it's going around, isn't it?

What else, what else?

Hmmmmm.

Yesterday I took a deep stretch class and we had to lay on cloth bolsters and grab these navajo looking blankets.

Let's just say it wasn't relaxing because I laid there and wondered who else had been on these cloth covered items. I may be a bit germ-o-phobe.

But that's gross, right?

Next time I shall bring a towel.

Today is the 10th, which means I am planning to take 10 photos.

It's 1:00 pm and so far I've taken one photo of my GPS in my car out of sheer desperation.

I fear I am boring.

Oh, that coffee cup at the top?

Didn't buy it. Wishin' I did.

I sort of don't do resolutions anymore. But this year I have two goals...

1. To eat clean

2. To stay home more

The clean eating is going great. Seriously, GREAT!

Check out this blog for some great recipes. She was my favorite instructor at my gym and then she got married and moved. Boo. Well, yay for her, but boo for me.

The staying home part, well, let's just say I will make a concerted effort this week.

Why do I have so many errands to run and places to be?

My goal is to get organized and consolidate all this crazy running around.

So, that's it.

Do you make resolutions? How are they going?

p.s. Any ideas on what to get a 17 year old boy for his birthday? My son turns 17 this week (YIKES!) and he says, quote, I am not really into my birthday.

Wow. Apparently the whole, "IT'S MY BIRTHDAY WEEK" gene skips a generation.

Why dogs rock.

Oh, my sweet dog.

If you've been a longtime reader you know I was not a dog person.

Until Sesame found her way into my world.

Here's the thing....

with the ages of my boys and my husband working a lot,

I am home alone a good bit.

This sweet girl keeps me company and listens to my awful singing.

She wags her tail when I walk in the door.

She follows me from room to room.

She actually wants to go for a walk around the block.

Or even a 3 mile run.

She adores cuddling.

She never runs from the camera.

On the day this photo was taken, I was sitting in the chair, and she climbed in to join me.

I thought it was so cute.

I got up, got the camera + tripod,

set the self timer

and

Viola!

It was like she knew not to move a muscle.

And she even looked straight at the camera.

She is a rock star.

I love this dog.

Christmas Memories: Instagram Edition

Hi there. I am back and sharing a {boring} re-cap.

To move things along quickly, I thought collages would be prudent.

Before we headed down to the Sunshine State to visit our kin we had a little Frat Pack celebration at home. The boys wanted to go to a Brazilian steak house.

You know the type, where copious amounts of meat are brought around on spits to your table.

I know, gross, right?

I got the salad bar, thankyouverymuch.

Anyhoo, at least the boys dressed up and looked fantastic.

Even though I got a bit misty-eyed at the photo.

There is no denying...they are little men for sure.

{p.s. boo for my pre-lit tree}

Off to ~~sweatyville~~ Florida we headed. We entertained ourselves with tic tac teeth and stops at Cracker Barrel. I took a photo of that darling mug but did not purchase. Once it was posted to Instagram and a few people said they loved it, I regretted not making the purchase.

Ah, but there was to be a return trip heading back to North Carolina.

That mug is now safely tucked in my cabinet.

We hung out at my parents home.

(that first photo is from the Church where my oldest received his First Communion)

The cousins played ipad monopoly and munched gummy worms.

This inspired "real" monopoly.

I took a pass. I am not a game person.

My husband helped sort out some computer problems.

He even called Apple and pretended to be my Dad.

We were slap happy from the heat at this point and this provided us with gut wrenching laughter.

Looking back, was it really that funny?

Ah, Florida. Even if it was quite warm, it sure is pretty, right?

Tim {a cradle Catholic} got first reconciliation, first communion and was confirmed here!

Me too....although for me, I was 30 years old when all that happened.

The Predicament just came up to me and said,

And here I had visions of sugarplums dancing in my head.

I was picturing us all sipping hot cocoa, eating freshly baked cookies and gathered around A Charlie Brown Christmas.

Wouldn't you know we had a Groundhog Day of sorts here.

I bribed my children again with the promise of Chipotle

{okay, I kind of have a thing for the veggie salad}

if they'd accompany me to the craft store to return an item I purchased when we were there the last time.

We are all three standing by the register waiting for the cashier to process the return

when suddenly,

she leans into the mike and says...

CODE 3.

Oh, my gosh, we were laughing.

The cashier looked peeved.

I asked her,

"What is a code 3?"

After giving me a not so Christmas-y look she tells me it means a manager has to approve the return.

So there ya go.

In other news,

it is time for my annual blog break.

I plan to soak up this last week of Advent and celebrate the birth of a very

special Baby.

Last week P.J. had a day off from school. He accompanied me to a craft store!

I know, right?

{disclaimer: I bribed him with Chipotle}

He went off to look for a fancy glass case for a special football and I was checking out other assorted goodies.

Then I got the following text....

I cracked up! Apparently he needs to spend more time in craft stores.

"Code 3" probably just meant something like,

Gertie, can you help someone with a yarn selection?

Helga, what aisle are the googly eyes on?

I was seriously laughing out loud that my boy thought there might be some kind of craft emergency.

But as I sit here typing this morning I can't figure out if it is hysterically funny

really sad.

When I was a teen Columbine hadn't happened.

9/11 hadn't happened.

Virginia Tech hadn't happened.

What do you think?

If you are the praying type, how about a prayer for today's teenagers.

Well, I almost got there. Technically I did take 10 but one was a self portrait and I am feeling a bit shy this morning.

Anyhoo, back to the day.

I woke up really wanting a bagel with lox + cream cheese.

Yum.

This is a familiar scene, isn't it?

This is well documented and someday I will be so glad I have all these jam session photos.

Awwww.

She's got a bit of fuzz on her nose, even.

My little tree in the kitchen. Makes me happy.

Our tree that the mini Predicament put up is still not lighting properly and has nary an ornament on it.

It's bugging me. But this sweet little tree just makes me smile.

Such simple joy...

And I decided to get all artsy and lay it out on a file folder.

No one in the Frat Pack even batted an eye as I put this little vignette together and then stood on a stool to take a photo.

Oh my, this was a good salad.

Spinach, carrots, orange bell pepper, beets, avocado + maytag blue.

Edamame. Yum.

Would you believe I have even more photos from our Biltmore day?

I do. I decided to press my luck and try and get some shots with my sons or perhaps even (gasp!) a brothers shot.

The Predicament had wandered off, so I handed my camera to my offspring.

Let's take a look...

Okay, so far so good. Not great, but it'll do, donkey.

{I always have to say, donkey after I say it'll do or that'll do. Do you know what movie that is from?}

Oh my gosh. When will this phase end?

In all fairness I was trying to plant one on his cheek.

In public.

It's how I deal with teenage angst. I don't recommend this method.

So, being a glutton for punishment I tried for the rare brother shot.

It is a roller coaster ride. That is life with teenagers.

Chit Chat.

I have more Biltmore photos, but really nothing more to say about our time there.

But I hate to let photos go to waste, so how about some chit chat that has absolutely nothing to do with the photos? Are you okay with that?

Good, because I lugged along the DSLR and an extra lens.

Today I had to go get my mammo. You ladies of a certain age know what I am talking about, right?

I daresay that yearly visit is more humiliating than the other lady visit.

You see, I think it is downright cruel to make you stand there topless, and they won't let you wear deodorant to the appointment.

Do they realize we may be in the hot flash season of our life? Oh, and the girl that was man-handling my bosom was about 22.

I was mortified as I stood there sweating all over the machine.

And to top it off I suddenly got a tickle in my throat and about coughed myself to death, all whilst sweating bullets with nary a stitch of fabric on my upper half.

The 22 year old, fully clothed nurse just stared at me while I tried to mouth the word....

waterrrrrrr, please.

Let's switch gears, shall we? The mini-Predicament put up our tree. God love him.

It is pre-lit. However, every other section of lights aren't working. Boo.

Did I tell you I am skipping cards this year? It is liberating, I tell you.

I love my Kindle, even though I didn't think I would.

But here's the glitch. I have probably read the equivalent of 47 books, what with all the free samples I have read.

Did you know I have never seen the movie, Elf in it's entirety?

This may be my year.

Oh, I have been having hot chocolate made with unsweetened vanilla almond milk.

It is the berries, let me tell ya.

We were blessed with a good weekend up in here.

A bit of Christmas shopping with my husband with a pit stop for a snack + wine.

How great is that? I was parched.

We also headed off on a little day trip. Nothing says "good weekend" like a bit of forced family fun.

It started with a stop for breakfast and a game of checkers.

Which I won! In all honesty, that doesn't really happen for me with the Frat Pack.

I am not being humble.

It's just that they cheat.

Don't believe me? Ask Toot Toot.

We drove to Asheville to see this beauty.....

I know, right? If you live anywhere close and you haven't been,

well,

you should.

And if you are with a teenage boy, splurge and buy the audio tour.

Otherwise you will be in and out in 10 minutes flat.

Apparently lavishly decorated homes aren't that exciting to all teen boys.

Who knew?

The boys hit the farm and Tim and I sampled wines.

Now, y'all know I am no wine snob, but no matter how cute the label may be on this wine,

no. thank. you.

Not a fan.

Just being honest.

This is post-turkey on Thanksgiving day.

One of the best hours of my week are spent here.

My son texted this photo to me during school (!) with the caption, look what I built!

I am just going to admit...I like that my kids have cell phones.

Is that wrong? I get updates, photos, jokes and love notes.

Dropping off K at his guitar rehearsal only to be called a short while later and informed that there was no rehearsal on Saturday. He is kinda nutty professor-ish. Builds a super awesome DNA model (if that is what it is) one day, and the next day can't keep track of his rehearsal schedule.

I got to have a fancy french salad at one of my favorite places in Charlotte.

And let me tell you, she is cute and her kids are adorable!

Happy Thanksgiving! I hope you are having a blessed day.

I know in our home, we have much to be thankful for.

I am thankful that we have the resources to feed our family. I don't want to take this for granted.

Many are hungry. Nicolle has really brought this to my attention in a loving way.

I am grateful for a husband that suggested that we visit here as a family and donate some pies.

I am grateful for the city I live in.

I am grateful for this restaurant in my city. I love the concept.

I am grateful for the cornbread we had there. Oh, yes. It was delicious.

I am grateful for my two teen boys that have very healthy appetites.

Obviously.

I am grateful for cameras. They capture special people and special moments in our lives.

After all, my scant Thanksgiving decor just got put out a mere 10 days ago.

After I finally decided to take down the Halloween stuff.

And I bought my whole Thanksgiving dinner from a local market.

Oh, and Costco.

The biggest pies you've ever seen at Costco.

I fear I am in a mood. My poor family.

And I am hobbling around. I tripped on either a flip flop or step in the garage last night.

It was dark, yadda yadda yadda....now I am limping.

So I won't be participating in the Turkey Trot that I hadn't signed up for anyway.

Good morning.

If we were really meeting for coffee I would serve you French Press coffee and invite you to sit on the back porch with me.

I am in the process of sprucing it up.

We bought furniture for it after 3 years of living here.

We use the porch a lot, but it wasn't "cute."

So what else should I do?

I want it to be fun and comfy.

That large monkey picture in the corner works color wise above the couch,

but I think the size might be wrong. I am trying to avoid a lot of nails because that wall behind the couch is the exterior of my house.

This post is going to be random. I know that word is used a lot, but it will apply today.

This post is not thought out. I am just sitting and pecking whilst sipping coffee and looking through my photos for ones I have recently taken, yet not blogged.

Oh, this. This is what is great about having a camera with you at all times. You don't have to purchase the pricey chocolate to be able to take a little inspiration home.

This is the inspiration for jazzing up my back porch a bit. The mixing of patterns that in days past had no business mixing, but in this day + age it works.

I think I am about on my third red cup of the season. It may actually be my third or fourth Starbucks of the year. I am only ever tempted anymore when they bring out the exotic syrups.

But quesadillas? I am tempted by them all year, every day, every hour, every minute.

I love living where this happens.

So pretty, right?

Here is what I want to know. How did I make it to age 39 before I fell head over heels in love with a dog? She is 70 pounds of pure love.

I went on a ladies field trip last week. We visited this Church.

We have been using the fire pit like crazy.

I told you how much I love her, didn't I? Poor baby was cold so I swaddled her. On my bed. The Predicament and I were laughing about when we lived in Texas she wasn't allowed upstairs or in our bedroom or on any carpet. Obviously that has changed.

Sushi, I love you too.

There. I think I am all caught up. Of course I am leaving out the unpleasant things. Trust me, there are some challenging moments up in here. I tend not to whip out the camera at those moments.

On Friday night my youngest child had his Confirmation.

It was a beautiful and moving ceremony.

Psalm 140:1-2 "I have cried to Thee, O Lord, hear me: hearken to my voice, when I cry to Thee. Let my prayer be directed as incense in Thy sight; the lifting up of my hands, as evening sacrifice."

My son took this so seriously. It was truly inspirational. He seemed so mature and grown up.

{let's overlook the fact that I did not iron his shirt, okay? I do not iron. The Predicament does all the ironing and he flew in from Boston in the nick of time, hence, wrinkled shirt}

My faith is such a blessing to me. I am so grateful for the faith of my children as well.

Life is a special occasion.

Life is a special occasion, isn't it?

I thought I had nothing to write about.

I looked at photos I had taken, yet had not blogged.

I looked at these photos and I thought, "they are about nothing."

But they are about something, aren't they?

They are about the little moment that make up LIFE.

Like rainy nights.

And there is beauty in that.

It is sipping wine, from a wine glass that has your initial on it, even though the glass doesn't belong to you.

It is noticing the little moments and appreciating that moment.

Maybe even enough to take a cell phone photo.

It is great moments hanging with neighbors, eating piping hot chili

and warming up near a crackling fire.

And roasting marshmallows.

It is about enjoying the silly nicknames your kids give you, for no apparent reason.

So, no...there haven't been any BIG things going on here.

(except Friday night, but I haven't organized my photos for that post yet)

The scariest thing I did on Halloween.

I had my 16 year old son drive my dog + I to the groomers.

You see, I didn't want my smelly, hairy dog messing up my new ride. Since my boy was home,

it meant our 3rd car was home (notice I didn't say his car, because it isn't)

which meant it would be the perfect day to get this chore checked off.

Now, it isn't his driving that scared me,

I sat in the back seat with the pooch.

Which meant he had complete control of the radio.

Which meant I had to listen to Seminole Wind

and the Florida State war chant.

So just picture that for a moment.

I am in the back seat with a 70 pound stinky dog and my ear drums are bursting with a war chant.

Oh, and he is further terrifying me by taking one hand off the wheel to tomahawk chop.

What can I say, he is his father's son. They love to scare the people that birthed them.

But still, we aren't to the scariest part.

Oh. my. gosh.

It was worse than his bedroom y'all.

And mouse ears....why?

Soda? Haven't all those lectures on high fructose corn syrup gotten through?

Next thing you know he'll be eating trans fat.

Oy.

It was terrifying, Holmes.

All I see in blogland this time of year are adorable pumpkin patch photos and precious costume photos.

It can make a mom of older kids feel kinda left out.

Back in the day I was all over pumpkin patch visits and adorable costumes.

Those days have passed and I have such mixed up emotions about it.

I did just fine last year. Just fine.

I dressed up my dog as a bumblebee, poured a glass of pinot noir and felt sorry for all the sad saps having to schlep their kids from house to house.

I think I have figured out last year was all about false bravado.

Maybe it is because we had a particularly challenging weekend with one of our boys, but that false bravado is out the window right now.

I must be a glutton for punishment looking at all these old photos.

These photos are killing me, Holmes.

Killing me.

I have no idea who Holmes is, it just sounds right.

So it is 8:11 am, Halloween morning and I am in a really melancholy state of mind.

Is to too early for that glass of pinot?

Will I ever be completely okay that my kids are growing up?

With the fact that they are practically almost grown men?

Will I ever come to grips with the fact that they shave and drive and talk in man voices?

I don't know. Moms of older kids are sorta rare in the blog world, trust me.

All I know is I am really grateful for these two. I just wish I had a time machine for one little day.

Did I really soak up every moment?

Do I ever?

And then it hits me. I am not soaking up these moments if I am stuck in yesterday.

I am a lucky mom that is blessed to raise these two young men.

Time to {wo}man up and be a windshield Mom instead of a rear-view mirror Mom.

Now if only I could get a photo of the two of them together it really would be a better ending to this post.

It is Friday and I have been up since 5:15 am by choice.

I wanted to try a new class at my gym taught by my new favorite teacher.

She is a former Olympic diver.

I loved the class except in all the running segments I came in dead last.

I don't know why I am telling you that because it is totally the norm for me.

When I got home I enjoyed some pumpkin coffee in that ahhh-dorable mug.

My sweet sister got it for me and I just love it!

It is gray and cold here. Getting colder by the minute. I am not complaining one bit.

I am ready for chili

and hot chocolate

and my snuggie.

I decided to twitter again. I have no idea why.

Fancy Luncheon

Yesterday I got to attend a fancy luncheon with my husband.

This luncheon took place in a visual art center which was once a historic, neo-Gothic church.

This is a far different setting from my usual lunch which is home alone and usually consists of leftovers.

Some of the art was really cool. Some of it was weird. Does that make me sound unenlightened?

I am just going to be honest and admit that sometimes I don't "get" modern art.

If art looks like sores or worms,

well,

not my thing.

I did love all the exposed brick walls. Sure wish this photo had turned out better.

One super cool thing about this art center is that you can walk in and watch or chat with the artists as they work. I thought that was really interesting although I was shy and didn't really talk to any of the artists. One artist asked me to write my mantra on a post it note and attach it to her wall. There were a lot of post its there with really clever stuff.

I racked my brain and then remembered this:

What if you only got to keep what you had thanked God for?

So I am curious....

Celebrating my best friend's birthday

Today is a day I am so thankful for.

His birthday is today.

He is my husband, my love, my best friend.

On this day, 46 years ago the course of my life was forever altered because he was born.

I thank God for him daily.

Thank you for being a wonderful husband, provider and Dad.

I love you with all my heart.

And thank you Toot Toot, for your decision to fill that 6th seat at the dining room table and add a baby to your brood. I am sure you cannot imagine life without this bundle of joy that had the nickname, "Poopsie" and sang a mean rendition of "Sweet Molly Malone."

Neither can I. You raised quite a man there, Toot Toot.

Quite a man.

Even if you dressed him really badly.

The Weekend: ATL edition

This weekend I had the pleasure of going on a girls trip.

Lots of unhealthy, but delicious food was consumed.

Including this Krispy Kreme shake.

It was sort of a show stopper.

And later that night we may have had homemade carrot cupcakes.

Y'all know who makes the best carrot cake, right?

That would be my Mama.

I got to have the best kind of girls weekend ever.

The kind that include my Mom + my sister.

We had a ball!

We kinda look like triplets, don't we?

Here is the best thing about traveling with people that know you best...

they will text you upon entering a port-a-potty.

Port-a-pottys are gross.

No clever segue here....back to the vittles!

There are a lot of upscale, grass-fed burger joints in Atlanta.

They were good. And yes, that is plural as we ate at two different ones.

They had two different vibes, but were equally delicious.

Each time we went in one we were amazed they were empty.

Then we'd look at our watches.

I guess the cool people don't eat a 5 p.m.

We are kind of grandma-like apparently.

We did some shopping. Isn't that required on a girls weekend?

Thought so.

And apparently gobs of eating.

See, another empty restaurant!

Oops, it was only 5:15 pm.

Butterbean hummus? Yes, please.

And if you serve it in a jar it tastes even better.

As I was flipping through old photos of my youngest for Wednesday's post I noticed an alarming trend.

Let's just announce to the world that I've given up on looking semi-cute.

Granted, that 3rd photo is a farm-like setting, but really?

Seriously, in almost every mother-son photo I am overall clad.

Thankfully my shoes weren't always photographed, because this pair?

Well, now that is double-whammy unfortunate.

And check it...I am still wearing them years later as the child is now a preschooler.

Yikes. No matter how many of those cocktails you consume, these overalls will not improve.

They needed to go buh-bye asap.

The Weekend: Sepia Edition

I took a few photos this weekend. I was in a sepia kind of mood.

My dog is so patient.

She just lets anyone do whatever.

She is so easy to love.

All 70 pounds of her.

This is his go-to way to decompress on a Friday afternoon.

On Saturday The Predicament + P were gone all day to the FSU/Duke game.

College football season is starting to wear me out.

Kellen had a rehearsal so he and I couldn't attend.

We used to opportunity to eat out all the live-long day.

We listened to K's favorite band as we tooled around town.

The Avett Brothers are growing on me.

This kid is growing on me too. Actually, strike that. He is firmly rooted in my heart.

After his rehearsal we went to my favorite restaurant. He loves the burger, sans cheese and I love the chicken souvlaki, extra feta please.

I just love everything about this place. Especially the alfresco dining.

Fast forward to Sunday...

My boy is learning manly things from his manly Dad.

And this is when I fell off the photo taking jaunt.

A bad mood may have crept in for no good reason.

Just keeping it real.

Each day is a gift. I need to remember that next time I get served a big portion of the crabbies.

I miss taking photos and lately I am the only person that cooperates.

Actually I took this because it was the last day I was 44.

So far, being 45 has been kind of uneventful.

This boy has really adjusted well to high school.

He loves it. That really makes me happy.

We went pumpkin shopping again.

The front porch needed a few more.

Pumpkins are so pretty.

Silver Lining.

I am just going to brag about my son for a moment.

Will you indulge me?

You see, he and I had tickets to a college game yesterday. He was excited to see "his" team play.

I was excited to have him all to myself for a whole day.

His team was favored to win. It is really what we thought would happen.

I was so happy that I was going to accompany him to this "sure bet" game.

The memories would be awesome. We would get to go on the field after the game.

He would get autographs. I would get to take photos.

But that isn't how it turned out.

That was a blessing is disguise because I was reminded of several great qualities about my son.

He is loyal.

He is respectful to fans of the opposing team.

He is a good sport.

He handles disappointment well.

He recognizes a lack of discipline.

He is aware of the benefit of a unity of purpose and notices when it is missing.

He was sorely disappointed, don't get me wrong. But he handled it so beautifully I couldn't help but be impressed.

And the thing I loved the most? He didn't wallow in the let down. He focused on next week.

I was a proud Mama.

Loved spending the time with you, P.

My Family.

I do love my family. I do. But sometimes they really disappoint me. There are times when they can be difficult to live with.

Times when they don't behave how I want them to.

Times when they don't jump for joy to have a family photo taken.

Or smile.

Or mark an occasion in a way I want them to.

Or they keep repeating a joke that has been way overplayed.

(Ahem...like closing your eyes in a photo!)

There are times they are not acting grateful, or kind or loving.

But, really....

The same could be said for me.

That is when I remember that I have this family for a reason.

We are supposed to learn something from each other in this life.

For them, it might be to learn to be more appreciative or to give praise, credit or respect.

But I need to learn things too.

Like to not rely on them for all of my happiness and joy.

Only He provides true happiness.

And that is only fair. My family is only human.

Just like me. So let's cut our families some slack today.

Show a little grace. Be thankful for them despite their shortcomings.

After all, isn't that what He would do?

He shaved it off Monday. It is Tuesday and he is growing it back for me.

It all started with the purchase of a few pumpkins.

And the promise of colder weather tomorrow.

I had big plans for today.

But then I decided to get out the Halloween decor.

Then I couldn't remember how I decorated last year so I pulled up posts from last October and got distracted on the computer. You know how that is, right?

Then I realized I was missing 2 vases and spent a large quantity of time looking for said vases when I suddenly had a flashback of a boy playing basketball in the house, and, well that was the end of those vases.

Then I got distracted by my new photo books I have been making and had an enjoyable trip down memory lane.

Then I decided to take photos and I put down my lens cap.

I finished taking photos and looked for my lens cap. It walked away.

I spent a good chunk of time looking for the lens cap.

Then I decided I'd rather take the photos with my phone to try some of the filters to see if I liked those photos better.

Then I caught the dog trying to make off with my ghost pillow I got on clearance after Halloween last year. I am thinking this pillow may not last long.

Then I thought, oops, better take something out to thaw for dinner.

Then one boy got home and informed me he might have plans.

I informed him that we were having a family dinner tonight.

Then my other son texted me to ask if he could have a friend come home with him.

I repeated my earlier speech, in text form, which takes a while.

Then he texted back, "Motherrrrrrr (for real)

it is Friday night. I think a Sunday night family dinner would be way better."

then I checked to see how thawed the meat was and decided it would be fine to toss back in the freezer.

And now I am exhausted.

In my defense, I will be sitting smack dab in the middle of my 40's next week.

Our new favorite side dish.

I am certainly not claiming to have invented this side dish.

It really is just succotash.

Whatever it is, it is good.

My boys love it and it uses up whatever you have on hand.

I start with a little of this:

This is probably why my boys love it.

All you need is a little just to give the vegetables some flavor.

I add to the pan some onions and peppers, if I have them.

Then I add my boys most detested vegetables ever.

Zucchini + summer squash

They usually gag if I serve these vegetables, but there is something about dicing them like this and flavoring them with a little bacon that does the trick.

Then I poke around in the freezer to see if there is anything else I can add to distract from the zucchini + summer squash.

On this night I threw in some frozen corn kernels and green peas.

I let it cook away on the stove until it looks done.

Don't you love how specific I am?

Then I plop a protein source on top.

It looks all gourmet and again, distracts from the zucchini + squash.

On this night I made wild scallops.

I have learned the way to cook scallops perfectly.

You must pat them really dry.

You must salt them a bit.

You must not crowd them.

You must put them in the pan and let them sit perfectly still.

If you move them around too soon they won't get that golden crust.

Okay. That's it.

I saw this movie last night. I cannot get it out of my head. If you have children, no matter the age it is worth seeing. As the mom of a junior in high school, the line that struck me was that we have stolen our kids junior and senior year of high school. This movie made me realize for all my talk of living in the present I was constantly shoving the future in my kids faces with non-stop talk of college, college, college. Today that stopped. It is time to walk the walk.

I cannot say enough about this film. If you have the chance to see it, GO. Even if you are tired. Even if it is raining. Even if your husband has a late meeting, GO. Let's give our kids their lives back.

There. I am off the soapbox.

1. I am never going to make my laundry detergent. There I said it. So shoot me.

2. I detest boiled eggs, so why would I pin something that shows how to make them heart shaped. Why?

3. This is still blowing my mind. Even my boys thought he was Scottish.

There is some excitement up in here.

My husband and older son are in Tallahassee.

They are making memories together.

My boy loves the Seminoles. It started many years ago.

{please ignore our unfortunate sofa choice}

My husband attended said university, and he roots for them but he is not obsessed.

The same cannot be said for my son.

I do believe that boy bleeds garnet + gold.

His love for the team would show up in Halloween costumes.

{which were lovingly handmade by his Nana}

It would show up in his fierce little 4 year old face.

It would show up in a tomahawk made from an empty paper towel cardboard tube.

He is a fan.

Oh. my. goodness.

How time does fly.

Here he is just last night at the pep rally.

I think my child that rarely emotes is having a ball.

It is rather difficult to get a photo of a frozen TV screen.

But check out my kid! He is wayyy into it.

I am not a photo editor. I think I am just too lazy. The most I ever do to a photo is click that little magic wand in iphoto.

But I recently discovered something pretty cool.

It is probably old news, but for what it is worth.....

I added this app to my phone and have recently discovered how cool it is.

I can never get 10 on the 10th. Weird.

Moving on...this boy bought a new electric guitar. He saved and he purchased. I love the bird in flight on the handle thingy. Isn't he looking so grown up? It's killing me, y'all.

These two heading off to watch the game. Look how tall my boy is! Dying, I tell ya.

I may have had baklava for breakfast purchased from the local Greek Festival.

Raspberries on the side make it healthy, right?

I run this and empty this e-v-e-r-y-d-a-y. Do you? Except when the boys are home. Then I assign one the top and one the bottom. Then, the next time I am cooking I get to play treasure hunt for all my cooking utensils. But one day I will miss that, won't I?

I may have had a pumpkin {!!!!!} doughnut for breakfast. I am happy to report it was not the same day as the baklava breakfast. I am not happy to report that my jeans are a tad tight. Must stay away from these in the future.

I recently got this text from my older son....

You see, he has been going to the gym. Working out. Lifting weights. I could not imagine what injury he had sustained.

Then he walked into my room like this...

He could not stretch out his arms his muscles were so sore.

Oh, I laughed. I did.

You see, I have done that to myself ever since I started exercising as a teen.

I am sore a lot.

My Mom {if she reads this} will be reminded of the time my arms were so sore that when the phone rang, I lifted it off the cradle {this was back in the day when phones had those curly cords} and placed the ear + mouth piece on the table, leaned over and said, "hello?"

We still imitate that all the time and laugh.

And that's all I've got today. Just wanted this memory was recorded.

Here are some reasons why I will think long and hard before insisting that my husband accompany me to Parent Night at school next year....

He will take videos of me when I don't suspect it. He will then show me the videos and my self esteem takes a blow because, why the harsh and serious face, Suzette? {no, I will not be uploading, thankyouverymuch}

When the Spanish 3 teacher asks a complete sentence in spanish to demonstrate how she interacts with the class he will answer, "si." {hello sweaty armpits. This is when I began doubting my invitation}

He will send me inappropriate texts. {note, some of his texts were deleted to keep it clean}

He will ask is it time to go several times.

He will get really competitive if a teacher divides the parents into teams. His competitiveness will be really ratcheted up if I end up on a different team.

He will attempt to get a Mom sitting behind him to engage in a cheer of sorts.

If his team loses he will blame it on the mom sitting behind him who wasn't into the cheer. Not at all.

Reason why I will beg him to go again next year...

Parent night was wayyyy more fun with him.

{I will just wear a stronger antiperspirant and have a cocktail beforehand}

This is what my family was doing at 8:44 pm last night. It doesn't seem that long ago that at 8:44 pm both of my boys were snug in their beds and had been for hours.

The Predicament was listening to itunes.

Sesame was snoozing at Tim's feet.

The older child was doing homework...supposedly.

I was taking photos and blocking my makeup-less face.

Awwww, the younger child was snug in his bed. High school seems to be wearing him out!

And now, drumroll please...

blog-a-versary + bribery

Today marks 3 years since my first riveting blog post. I am not sure there will be anyone reading that has been along for the whole ride unless you are related to me. And even those readers are iffy. It is difficult to find the words to express how blogging has changed my outlook.

It helped me to realize that I do really like where I live. (by the way this weekend marks 4 years in the QC)

It has helped to notice and love the ordinary moments of my life.

It has helped me to document these growing years of my boys.

It has introduced me to many like-minded bloggers whom I enjoy interacting with.

It has made me realize how much I love comments. Really. That sounds kind of lame, but bloggers like to be read. I never check stats and I am rather loosely aware of the followers but the comments? That is what I love. The fact that someone took the time to leave a comment is just amazing and awesome to me.

Blogging has helped me document these moments...
The time I considered getting a job.
The time I realized my kid was a poet.
The time I shouldn't haven't taken The Predicament to cycle class.
The time I mistakenly thought substitute teaching was a good idea.
The time my kids pondered whether or not they were doctor material.
The absolute best Predicament story ever.
The time I realized my boys reference "junk" a lot.

Don't you just love getting "real" mail?

Yesterday I was surprised and so happy to get a package in the mail. It falls into the "just because" category and that is the sweetest mail of all!

It was from my sweet friend Nicolle!

If you read her blog, (you totally should!) you will know she recently took a trip to Santa Fe.

She picked up a little something for me...

How cute is that? We have a mutual love for coffee.

She picked up this sweet Mary tile for me!

I love it and I am so humbled that she thought of me while on her trip!

It is perfect because I am making a little "Mary corner" of my own.

The Predicament continues to create photo ops.

When my children balk at having photos taken I head to Trader Joe's for flowers to get my fix.

I love how willing they are...from any angle.

Then I get bored with the flowers and try to sneak a few kid pics.

After every guitar lesson my youngest does a little window shopping. This sweet guitar almost made me sign up for lessons.

During the summer I make my boys do their own laundry. Not because I am lazy, but because I want my future daughter-in-laws to love me. I did giggle when I walked by the washer and saw what cycle my older son chose for his laundry.

Apparently all garnet + gold clothing requires the delicate cycle.

My older boy drove himself to school yesterday. **gulp**

My heart was racing and I may have been hyperventilating.

Then I got the sweetest text a Mom can get...

Thank you, Lord.

My prayers today are for those in the path of Irene.

We are not in her path but I sure appreciate the e-mails and texts from those of you that have been concerned for me. This blog world rocks the hizzle.

What else is left to tell.

I may be an over-sharer. I have blogged 45 time this summer and yet, I still feel compelled to share more. This has been a red letter summer for the Frat Pack + Me. I have lived long enough to know, some summers are just like that. What a blessing it has been! Won't you join me for a little trip down summer's memory lane?

Several times this summer I had a lump in my throat because this has been the summer of major growth for my boys. It is sweet to catch them doing something little boyish.

Especially when that little boyish activity is egged on by a grandparent.

Who can forget our Fast + Furious day with Toot Toot at Ikea?

Or watching my youngest become a rock star?

I survived my fair share of Frat Pack havoc for sure. Dreadful Target trips...

and doctor appointments complete with fisticuffs.

I had my fair share of pure bliss as well. I feel so blessed to have celebrated 22 years of marriage with a trip to Italy.

I drove a boat for the first time ever.

I survived being blown off by a celebrity. And I use the term celebrity lightly. Very lightly.

I survived a Rico Suave sighting.

I got to attend Mass in Italian only to discover it was really Vespers.

I survived putting my kids on a plane without a parent for the first time.

We made sure to plan in plenty of good 'ol lazy days of summer.

And Harry Potter movie marathons.

I struggled with getting my boys to pose for photos with me.

I was along for the ride on some noteworthy milestones for my oldest boy. Like getting his braces off!

And getting to witness how thoughtful of others he is.

{They had a little candy bar for the kids to fill up bags with candy you aren't supposed to eat with braces on. Other kids crammed their bags crazy full, but my sweet boy took just a few to makes sure there was enough for all. I love that kid!}

My heart is still in my throat for this milestone. I am now doing a lot more of Stop. Drop. + Pray.

I got to hang with my homie, Lisa.

I shared poor fashion choices and bad sh-mullets.

And some I kept all to myself because of just plain bad behavior that I wanted to blame on The Predicament. Like this photo...

That is sooo The Predicament's style, right? I mean did you see him in the background?

But sadly, there is photographic evidence that makes it dishonest to blame it on my husband...

My boys head back to school later this week. I plan to soak up the last few days with them. I'll see you at the end of the week.

Milestone

So our car insurance just doubled.

We have a new driver up in here.

I am so excited for my boy, but I am a bit weepy.

He now needs me for one less thing. You think this day will never come and then bam...it's here.

If you have little kids you are thinking, "I can't imagine." Trust me, when you are looking it square in the eye, you STILL can't imagine. I am beginning to suspect that feeling never goes away no matter what milestone your kid just crossed.

He promptly went and attached the FSU flag to MY car.

I love this kid. I am proud of the careful driver he is. I am happy to see the confident smile on his face.

I trust him.

However....

this prayer is now forever added to my day...

Lord grant him a steady hand

and watchful eye

that no man may be hurt

when he passes by

California Love

We are home! We enjoyed a lovely little mini-vacation in northern California with Lisa + her family. My husband had business in San Fran so the boys and I booked flights and tagged along. Let's just state the facts...I could seriously get used to the weather there! Perfection, I tell you. If you are from California and you are reading this...yes, it is humid on the east coast. Yes, we have access to avocados and no, I do not reside on a farm. {only Lisa will get this reference, but maybe you can infer some convos I had with some California natives.}

So here is how it all went down....

So, this is my great friend, Lisa.

We met in Texas, hit it off and the rest is history.

Somehow this friendship works despite living 3,000 miles apart.

She's a keeper.

She has 4 perfect children. That beauty you see there is just one of them. I could take photos of her girls all day. Teens actually smile? Who knew?

Oh, and look who stopped by with the gaggle in tow?

Kim, from the blog, Yep, they are all mine!

This was my first blogger meet up! I was excited. Go read her post about it. It is far more entertaining than anything I could come up with. Suffice to say I loved her and her precious gaggle.

And how awesome of a friend do I have that graciously opened her home so that I could meet Kim and her gaggle? Thanks a million, Lisa!

So on to the rest of this visit...We found a restaurant that served skinny cocktails!

Yes, please!

Although I think I kind of negated the skinny part because I shared this with the Mister.

Cocktails have a way of making the illogical seem logical, don't they?

Don't tell him I told you this, but The Predicament creates photo ops for himself for this blog, I do believe.

Hence....

One of the things I love about visiting Lisa, is that it feels like we are family.

Is he cute or what? We have a special relationship because apparently I am the only person that has ever read Goodnight Moon to him.

They have attached it to the back of our bathroom door. When you take a, ahem, seat, there is Bobby Brady looking you square in the eye.

One of my sports bras accidentally got mixed up in one of their clean laundry piles.

For weeks they harassed one another with it.

One day it would be on a hanger draped over the shower rod.

One day it would be hanging on a closet door knob.

It eventually progressed to backpacks and guitar cases.

Oh, they had a field day with my sports bra.

When I gave birth to those sweet, cuddly bundles of joy I had no idea what was in store for me.

Can I just say it's been the best ride of my life?

Recently, on Kim's blog she asked her husband a question via text message. His answers are so sweet. He was brimming with answers.

I decided to ask my husband, of 22 years mind you, the same question.

I was hoping for sappy.

Instead, here's what I got...

Okay, so maybe I wasn't clear on the directions.

This looks like it might be taking a direction that would be, shall we say, spicy.

My mom and mother-in-law read this blog.

Let's try that again, but with the children this time.

Okay, so he is 16. Clearly he has better things to do.
